A domain (from English domain, “area”, “domain”) is a coherent subarea of the hierarchical Domain Name System (DNS). In the domain assignment procedure, it is a name below a top-level domain that is unique and unambiguous worldwide on the Internet and can be freely selected under certain rules. It is a unique and memorable designation used to identify a website on the Internet. It serves as an address through which users can access a particular website. A domain consists of two main parts: the domain name and the top-level domain (TLD).
The domain name is the unique part of the address and is usually chosen by the owner of the website. It can consist of letters, numbers and hyphens and should reflect the identity or theme of the website. For example, “example” is the domain name in the domain “example.com”.
The top-level domain (TLD) is the part of the domain that indicates the type or country of the website. Well-known TLDs include “.com” for commercial websites, “.org” for non-profit organizations, “.net” for network resources, and country-specific TLDs such as “.de” for Germany or “.uk” for the United Kingdom.
Together, the domain name and TLD form a complete domain that is unique and points to a specific website. For example, the domain “example.com” belongs to a website called “Example”.
Additional subdomains can be added to a domain – each separated by a dot. Each section (domain and subdomain) may contain a maximum of 63 characters. However, the total length of the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) must not exceed 255 characters.
Domains are important because they enable users to find and identify websites more easily. They also serve as the basis for e-mail addresses, where the part after the “@” sign is usually the domain name. In addition, domains can be used for other purposes such as setting up your own email servers or creating custom subdomains.
A well-chosen domain can also enhance the branding and visibility of a website. When choosing a domain, you should pay attention to points such as memorability, relevance, TDL selection, trademark issues, and renewal options.
