Verification of Payee

Mandatory payee verification from October 9, 2025

Greater security in European payment transactions

An important change will come into effect on October 9, 2025: payee verification – also known as Verification of Payee (VoP) – will become mandatory in the EU. This procedure is intended to significantly reduce incorrect transfers and cases of fraud.

What is payee verification?

Until now, SEPA transfers have not been checked to ensure that the payee name entered actually matches the IBAN provided.

This will change from October 2025: banks will have to check the name and IBAN before executing a transfer. The result will be displayed to the payer immediately.

How the verification works

As soon as a transfer is entered, the bank checks:

  • Comparison of name and IBAN at the recipient bank
  • Feedback in three stages:
✅ Match: Name and IBAN match.
⚠️ Close match: Minor discrepancy, e.g., typo.
❌ No match: Name does not match the IBAN.

Depending on the result, a warning message appears. In case of discrepancies, the bank can block the order or request confirmation at its own risk.

Purpose of the new regulation

EU Regulation 2024/886 on real-time transfers (Instant Payments Regulation) makes recipient verification mandatory. It aims to:

  • Reduce the risk of fraud through manipulated IBANs and fake invoices.
  • Prevent incorrect transfers due to typing errors.
  • Strengthen confidence in real-time and online transfers.

Timeline

  • From October 5, 2025: Technical infrastructure ready for use
  • From October 9, 2025: Mandatory recipient verification for all EU banks
  • From July 2027: Introduction for banks outside the eurozone

What companies should do now

To ensure that transfers run smoothly after the deadline, companies should take action now:

  • Check account details: The name on file with the bank must match exactly the name on invoices or websites.
  • Example: “Müller GmbH & Co. KG” ≠ “Müller GmbH.”
  • Update bank details: Regularly check accounting software and payment data.
  • Adjust communication: Inform business partners of the correct spelling of the recipient’s name.
  • Update software: Ensure that banking and ERP systems support VoP.
  • Inform the team: Train accounting and sales on the new processes.

Impact on private individuals

For private customers, the process remains largely the same – only more secure:

  • The banking app shows whether the name and IBAN match.
  • If there are any discrepancies, a warning message is displayed.
  • This allows incorrect transfers to be identified and prevented more quickly.

Conclusion

Verification of Payee is a key step toward greater security and transparency in European payment transactions. From October 9, 2025, the following will apply: The name and IBAN must match, otherwise a warning will be issued—or the transfer will be blocked.

Checking your master data early on will help you avoid delays and ensure smooth payments in the future.
